Mountain Biking in the Tushars
Exploring Tushar Trails by Bike!
We have a fun day of biking planned in this itinerary, and in order to ensure you have the energy to tackle the trail, we recommend you start the day with a breakfast at El Bambi Cafe, a Beaver dinner that has a large menu filled with hearty, homemade breakfast items to get you started on the right foot. It’s made-to-order omelets are excellent, and this Main Street restaurant gets all the other morning staples right as well, including pancakes, biscuits, cinnamon rolls, French Toast, and potatoes.
While El Bambi has excellent lunch options as well, you’ll be on the road for that meal, so pick up a picnic lunch for later at Mike’s Food Town, also on Main Street. The grocery store has anything you could want to create your own picnic, as well as house-made sandwiches which will hit the spot out on the trail.
Accessing the Trailheads at Eagle Point Resort
Now that you’re well feed and prepared for the day, hit highway and drive up the canyon about 40 minutes to Eagle Point Resort, where you can take advantage of some of the region’s best mountain biking trails. Exploring the breathtaking terrain and vistas surrounding Eagle Point by mountain bike is certainly one of the more popular activities for all ages offered by the resort. Ride historic and new singletrack trails through open meadows, peaks, and valleys that make up the world-renowned Tushar Mountains.
Choose from five different singletrack trails that are among a network of 11 miles to explore. If you’d rather not take the lung-busting trip to the top of the mountain, you can take shuttle there and enjoy the gravity-fueled ride down. A full-service mountain bike shop at the resort offers rentals for those who need a ride, and repairs for those who’ve been hard on their own set of wheels. (Hard-core mountain bikers will want to make the trip to Eagle Point in July when it hosts the Tushar Crusher race, which attracts some of the top cyclists in the country.)
When you’re ready for lunch, take a break by the lawn of the lodge and enjoy the views of the mountains. After lunch, take advantage of being the mountains and make side trip to Big John Flat, where you can see the highest peak in the county, Mt. Delano. Located just south of the Tushar Mountain Peaks, Big John Flat area is a favorite recreational spot because of its large meadows that have spectacular scenery. This area is open to ATV use on designated roads and trails, but you’ll also find routes just for hiking, mountain biking, and other non-motorized transportation. It’s one of the area’s most scenic destinations, yet rarely crowded. Be sure to get a picture of the mountain goats when you’re there.
Kan Kun Restaurant
Drive back to town and stop for dinner at the Kan Kun Mexican restaurant in Beaver. The shrimp tacos area local favorite. Since 1992, the Kan Kun restaurant has been owned and operated by Santiago and Rita Amezcua, and they offer an excellent variety of seafood and meat dishes to choose from in their extensive menu. Eat up, after a day in the mountains, you’ll have earned it!
